Irumudi Movie Review: A sincere take on fatherhood and how we raise daughters

Irumudi is, at its heart, less about faith than fatherhood. Trinadha (Ravi Teja), a devout Ayyappa devotee struggling with alcoholism, finds his purpose in his daughter Manikanta (Baby Nakshathra), while Gopal Raju (Sai Kumar) raises his daughter Gayathri with a very different philosophy—to survive by staying silent. Shiva Nirvana juxtaposes these contrasting parenting approaches with remarkable restraint, allowing their emotional consequences to speak louder than words. While the first half feels crowded with too many antagonistic characters, making the narrative occasionally uneven, the second half brings these threads together with conviction. The result is a moving social drama that leaves you reflecting on how we raise—and, more importantly, how we listen to—our daughters. What begins as an emotional father-daughter drama slowly reveals itself to be a larger conversation about the ways women are conditioned into silence, especially when faced with uncomfortable truths or difficult circumstances. The film’s strongest writing choice lies in the contrast between Trinadha and Gopal Raju. Both fathers want to protect their daughters, but their understanding of protection comes from two completely different places. Trinadha sees Manikanta as a blessing from God. Despite his own flaws and his battle with alcoholism, he creates a space where his daughter knows she can return to him without fear. His love is not just about protecting her from the world but giving her the confidence to speak when the world tries to silence her.Gopal Raju, on the other hand, represents a generation that mistakes silence for safety. His advice to his daughter comes from fear—an attempt to shield her from the conflicts and judgments of a patriarchal society. But in doing so, he unknowingly teaches her to suppress her own voice. This contrast forms the emotional backbone of Irumudi. Shiva Nirvana has always displayed a keen understanding of human emotions, and here too, he approaches the father-daughter relationship with tenderness rather than melodrama. The affection, conflicts and unspoken emotions between these characters feel deeply rooted, allowing the emotional moments to land with sincerity. The Ayyappa Deeksha portions work well within the narrative as they reveal another side of Trinadha’s personality. Beyond being a religious ritual, it becomes a reflection of his discipline, beliefs and inner conflicts. The contrast between his devotion and his personal struggles adds more depth to his character, showing that he is not defined only by his flaws.Baby Nakshathra delivers a performance filled with warmth and maturity. She beautifully balances the innocence, emotional vulnerability and strength required for Manikanta, making her bond with Ravi Teja one of the film’s biggest strengths. The film does have its narrative challenges. Several characters with negative shades are introduced to highlight Trinadha’s constant battles. His instinct to stand up for others and protect those around him repeatedly puts him in conflict, leading to a growing number of enemies. While this builds the tension, the first half leaves some ambiguity around the motivations of these antagonists, making the narrative feel slightly scattered. The second half, however, patiently unravels these threads and gives the conflicts a stronger emotional purpose. At its core, Irumudi is not just about fathers loving their daughters. It is about the kind of love that gives daughters the courage to speak—and the kind of fear that teaches them to remain silent. Shiva Nirvana beautifully brings an immensely important subject to the forefront through an engaging yet poignant narrative, transforming a personal father-daughter story into a larger reflection on parenting, protection and the importance of being heard.
