Sometimes the best part of a movie happens before anyone says a word. One great guitar riff can set the scene, define a character, or turn an ordinary movie moment into something unforgettable. The best rock music movie soundtracks have had a life outside of the movie since rock has been around. Some soundtracks are so good they’re worth owning even if you’ve never seen the film. From Dazed and Confused and Almost Famous to Heavy Metal and Wayne’s World, these movies didn’t just use great rock songs: they made them part of the story.

10 of the Best Rock Music Movie Soundtracks

    Almost Famous(2000)

This one may be the ultimate rock movie soundtrack for old-schoolers. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Elton John, David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and Lynyrd Skynyrd. “Tiny Dancer” alone became permanently attached to the movie.

    Dazed and Confused(1993)

Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Foghat and more. Basically, somebody took a great ’70s FM rock station and turned it into a movie soundtrack. It was so loaded they released a second soundtrack.

    Fast Times at Ridgemont High(1982)

Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Sammy Hagar, Joe Walsh and more. The artist list reads like a Rock Hall induction. Plus, you’ve got the unforgettable use of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” in the movie, despite Damone specifically telling Rat to play side one of Led Zeppelin IV. “Kashmir” isn’t even on IV. That’s part of the joke. You should turn this up more, dude.

    Heavy Metal(1981)

An underrated film with a rock music movie soundtrack almost absurdly stacked: Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Journey, Stevie Nicks, Nazareth, Devo, Sammy Hagar and more. Heavy Metal was the ’80s biggest adult animation movie by a landslide and it’s still a cult favorite.

    Wayne’s World(1992)

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” got an enormous second life thanks to Wayne and the gang. Add in Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and you’ve got one of the defining rock soundtracks of the ’90s. I dare you to watch this scene and not sing along. It can’t be done.

    Singles(1992)

Talk about having your thumb on the pulse of where music is heading next. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees. This rock music movie soundtrack helped capture grunge at exactly the moment it was exploding nationally.

    The Crow(1994)

The Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine and more. Dark, heavy and atmospheric, with a soundtrack that became a major part of the movie’s identity.

    Goodfellas(1990)

Scorsese is ridiculously good at using existing songs. Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love,” Derek and the Dominos’ “Layla,” The Rolling Stones, The Who, and others don’t just accompany scenes; they’re part of the storytelling.

    School of Rock(2003)

The Doors, The Who, Cream, AC/DC, Ramones, and David Bowie, along with the movie’s original performances. It’s basically a gateway for kids discovering rock music. The end credits with AC/DC’s “Long Way to the Top” ends the movie on a high note.

    Detroit Rock City(1999)

This absolutely deserves a spot, and I’m not just saying that as a Motor City homer. KISS, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, and more. The entire movie is essentially a love letter to being a teenage rock fan in 1978.

Which Rock Music Movie Soundtrack Would You Put on This List?

The best movie soundtracks do more than fill the silence between lines. They become part of the movie. You hear “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and suddenly you’re headbanging with Wayne and Garth. “Tiny Dancer” puts you right back on the Almost Famous tour bus, and “School of Rock” can make even the least musical among us consider buying a guitar.

Of course, narrowing this down to ten means some great soundtracks got left on the cutting-room floor. So now it’s your turn: What film has the greatest rock music soundtrack of all time and which one did we completely screw up by leaving off the list?
