‘The Boy’: Brahms’ Iconic Mask Was Added Entirely in Post-Production

Ten years later, The Boy remains one of those wonderfully weird little horror success stories.
Directed by William Brent Bell, the 2016 horror film cost around $10 million and quietly turned into a smash, grossing more than $70 million worldwide and eventually spawning Brahms: The Boy II.
But one of the most memorable parts of the original movie almost looked completely different.
Speaking with Bloody Good Horror for the film’s 10th anniversary, Bell reflected on the now-famous third-act reveal that Brahms (James Russell) has been living inside the walls of the Heelshire home the entire time.
What’s fascinating is that Russell never wore the Brahms mask during filming. It didn’t exist.
“The whole character is shot without a mask,” Bell explains, revealing that early test audiences liked the twist but weren’t particularly frightened by Brahms himself.
That changed after the filmmakers screened the movie for producer Roy Lee.
“He kind of was just like, ‘I have one question: did you ever think of him having a mask?’” Bell recalls. “Nobody ever thought of that, because we were also focused on the doll.”
They designed the now-iconic childlike mask after the movie had already been shot, and a visual effects company digitally placed it over Brahms’ face throughout the entire finale.
“And it’s like some of the best visual effects I’ve ever seen in a movie, because you can’t tell,” says Bell.
He’s right. The difference was immediate.
“The very first time we showed it again with him and he has the mask on, then audiences really kind of flipped,” Bell added. “It was just so much better, him coming out in that strange, kind of childlike almost mask, but being this dirty, greasy dude living in the walls, which people love.”
It’s a great reminder of how much a movie can change after everyone has gone home. Brahms’ mask is such an integral part of The Boy that it’s difficult to imagine the character without it, and yet it wasn’t even part of the movie until after they had already screened the damn thing.
