The upcoming high-octane thriller Runner strips the modern race-against-the-clock action movie down to pure, relentless momentum. Directed by seasoned stunt-and-action veteran Scott Waugh (Act of Valor, Need for Speed), the film places Reacher powerhouse Alan Ritchson at the center of a claustrophobic, three-hour deadline where every missed second and stray bullet carries fatal consequences. It is a surprising release from the usually family-friendly studio Angel, but Runneris way better than I was expecting.

Runner follows Hank Malone (Ritchson), an elite former soldier turned high-stakes courier tasked with a vital humanitarian run: transporting a life-saving donor organ across hostile territory to save a critically ill seven-year-old girl. The routine transport violently derails when a ruthless cartel syndicate—commanded by the menacing Damian Zaldívar (Rodrigo Santoro)—sets out to hijack the cargo for the black market. Thrust along for the ride is Ben Bishop (Owen Wilson), an out-of-his-depth medical courier who must form an uneasy alliance with Hank as they navigate a brutal gauntlet of ambushes, crossfires, and betrayals.

I spoke with two of the film’s stars and the director about Runner. Scott Waugh details his approach to practical, visceral filmmaking, choreographing vehicular destruction, and maintaining white-knuckle pacing within a real-time narrative window. Owen Wilson breaks down the unlikely buddy dynamic between Bishop and Ritchson’s Malone, finding organic comedic relief amid relentless danger and leaning into physical comedy under extreme pressure. Rodrigo Santoro (300) discusses crafting a chilling, calculating antagonist whose cold ambition drives the film’s brutal stakes, providing the ultimate foil to Hank’s desperate mission.

Runneropens in theaters on September 8th.
