Journalist and former Dateline NBC presenter Chris Hansen has spoken out regarding the upcoming film Primetime, clarifying that he holds no ill will towards actor Robert Pattinson while directing sharp criticism at the filmmakers behind the project.
The film, directed by Lance Oppenheim, reportedly draws heavy inspiration from Hansen’s iconic investigative series To Catch a Predator, with Pattinson portraying a character modelled after the television host.
Speaking about the feature, Hansen made it clear that he harbors no animosity towards Pattinson, describing him as a talented actor who is simply executing a role. However, Hansen voiced strong displeasure regarding the production team and the premise of the project, characterizing the portrayal as an insult to the serious nature of the original investigative work.
Hansen emphasised that the original broadcasts were designed to expose internet predators and protect vulnerable minors rather than serve as mere entertainment or tabloid fodder.
He expressed frustration over the team behind Primetime attempting to profit from or satirize a real-world issue without acknowledging the genuine danger and law enforcement collaboration involved in the original stings.
The comments come as interest surrounding Primetime continues to build, highlighting the tension between dramatised Hollywood retellings and the real-life media figures who originally reported on these sensitive subjects.
Hansen maintained that while he respects Pattinson’s artistic involvement, the underlying framing of the film misrepresents the intent and gravity of his broadcast legacy.
