Independent filmmakers often face greater challenges in getting their films released than in making them. To address this issue, a new platform titled “Cine Totem” is set to begin regular screenings of independent films in Dhaka.
The initiative will host independent film screenings on the last Thursday and Friday of every month at the auditorium of the Russian House in Dhanmondi.
The organisers said the films will be screened in the internationally recognised DCP format with 7.1 surround sound, allowing audiences to experience films in a complete cinematic environment.
The first edition of Cine Totem will be held on September 24 and 25. On September 24, the lineup will feature Russian filmmaker Arsen Aristakesyan’s “The Mute”, Golam Rabbani’s “Churat”, Mohammad Nuruzzaman’s “Mastul” and Khandaker Suman’s “Satao”.
The following day, September 25, audiences will be able to watch Molla Sagar’s “Vobar Bhita”, Afroza Hossain Sara’s “Timir Gaan” and Ivan Monowar’s “Passenger”. The day will also feature Akash Haque’s feature film “The University of Chankharpul”.
Following each screening, a question-and-answer session and informal discussion will be arranged with audiences and filmmakers. According to the organisers, the initiative aims to create a space for direct interaction between filmmakers and viewers while encouraging open discussions on cinema.
