DC Studiosand Warner Bros.are about to release “Clayface” later this month in theaters, and co-CEO Peter Safran has an optimistic update concerning the gestating “Swamp Thing” movie that had James Mangold attached (was one of the first projects announced as part of their first run of DC films and shows in development).
Speaking with Deadline on the red carpet at the premiere of “Clayface,” Safran shared that the script for “Swamp Thing” is still being actively worked on. We’re assuming that Mangold is involved with it given the phrasing used by the studio exec.
“We’re working on it, absolutely,” Safran told the outlet. “The script is being written as we speak. But it’s something we’re excited about. All these things take time – when you’ve already got a filmmaker involved, you’ve got to wait for their window [of availability] as well.”
A pretty good sign after mostly radio silence on “Swamp Thing” sinceJames Gunn and the studio’s first reveal. Although they’ve stopped short of detailing the production timeline, it doesn’t sound like it has been given any sort of green light, and we’ve seen a handful of these DC projects not make it past the finish line. Of course, Mangold isn’t a stranger to the world of comic book movies, having tackled Hugh Jackman‘s “The Wolverine” and R-rated entry “Logan” during the Fox-era of the “X-Men” franchise. Seeing the filmmaker dabble in the world of horror, specifically body-horror, would be something different from his latest works, for sure.
If you didn’t already know, “Swamp Thing” has had multiple adaptations in the past. Wes Craven, director of “Scream” and “Nightmare on Elm Street,” was behind the original feature film, and James Wan,ion series on HBO Max that leaned a little more into the horror side

“Clayface” is set to be released on October 23, and it was revealed by producer Matt Reeves that he and co-writer Mike Flanagan had been developing the horror-focused DC Comics flick before DC Studios was fully established. We’ll be curious to see how many more mature or horror films they attempt to make; it will likely come down to the reception of projects like “Clayface,” which feels like an experiment of sorts.
