As La Bola Negra becomes the highest-grossing Spanish film at the local box office this year, Spain’sleading distributors, exhibitors, public broadcasters and streaming platforms have come together atValladolid International Film Week todiscuss how tobuild on this success.

The event, also known as Seminci, runs from October 23-31.

This edition marks a leadership change after Seminci director José Luis Cienfuegos died suddenly last December, aged just 60. Marinam, took over the running of Seminci’s 71st edition and agreed to remain in charge until a formal search for Cienfuegos’ successor begins towards the end of 2026

Botht the Seville European Film Festival, which he oversaw for 11 years. When he moved to Valladolid, they followed, withg

“The idea [Cienfuegos] had when we started working for the Seminci was to honour the festival’s long history, with its strong focus on Spanish filmmakers, but also to encourage it to embrace new trends and prominent figures in contemporary cinema, both from Spain and abroad,” Estrada explains.

Seminci aims to shine a spotlight on as many as possible of the leading indie filmmakers with titles due for release in Spain or looking for distribution.

“We want to focus on attracting younger audiences and forging closer ties with the industry,” says

Semnici 2026 is screening 208 films, with 22 titles in the official competition. These include Golden Lion winner Woman Unknown, Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prix winner La Gradiva, Belin titles including Lance Hammer’s Queen At Sea and Markus Schleinzer’s Rose, as well as Emmanuel Marre’s A Man Of His Time, and Lili Horvát’s My Notes On Mars, starring Mackenzie Davis and Rupert Friend, which opened the festival.

Prize money worth €214,000 is on offer across the competition and parallel sections. The top two awards, the Golden and Silver Spikes, carry prizes of €70,000 and €25,000 respectively for the Spanish distributors of the winning films. The Meeting Point strand for first and second features has also received a boost, with three awards now totalling €45,000.

A further nine films are screening out of competition, including Gael García Bernal’s Hombre Al Agua, which will close the festival, Simon Stone’s Elsinore and Padraic McKinley’s The Weight.

    The MERCI

Originally created by Cienfuegos in Seville, the Independent Film Market (MERCI), later moved to Valladolid. It is now in its sixth edition and turns the spotlight on the distribution and exhibition sectors.

Over 200 distributors and exhibitors attend what has become a key meeting point for the Spanish film industry.

“The market features a selection of 26 features due for release shortly after the film week,” explains successes such as La Bola Negra, but independent cinema needs to keep exploring ways to reach and consolidate theatrical audiences, particularly new ones.”

For Estrada, “The momentum generated by Spanish films such as La Bola Negra or The Beloved so far in 2026, alongside Sundays and Sirâtlast year, will help draw audiences back to cinemas in the long term. Seminci is a great testing ground.”

Of the 2025 titles presented in Valladolid, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet went on to gross $8.7m to become the highest performer at the Spanish box office.

Spain’s theatrical box office generated $515m (€459m) between January and the end of September 2026, already surpassing the 2025 full-year total of $508m (€453m). La Bola Negra, which opened on September 25, has now grossed nearly $25 (€30m).
