What the extended cut means
An extended cut gives fans more of the ‘Mirzapur’ world. The theatrical version already ran for three hours and 17 minutes. That length was the most common complaint from critics. Some reviewers said trimming 30 to 40 minutes would have helped. Now the film returns in a longer form. Viewers can pause and watch it in parts.
Box office record
The film did well in theatres. It reportedly earned ₹28.11 crore on day one in India. The worldwide gross reached ₹336.83 crore. India net stood at ₹233.73 crore. India gross was ₹275.83 crore. Overseas gross was ₹61 crore. The film also reportedly returned more than 159 per cent on its investment.
The story and cast
The film is an interquel. It is set between the events of the first season, which arrived in 2018. It is not a sequel to Season 3. Pankaj Tripathi plays Kaleen Bhaiya. Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit. Divyenndu is back as Munna Bhaiya. Ravi Kishan plays Babban Yadav, a drug lord from Jaisalmer. Jitendra Kumar appears as Bablu.
Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar produced the film under the Excel Entertainment banner. Gurmmeet Singh directed it.
What critics said
The response was mixed to positive. Viewers praised the familiar characters, the sharp dialogue and the dark humour. Pankaj Tripathi won praise for his calm and commanding Kaleen Bhaiya. Ali Fazal impressed with the anger and aggression he brought to Guddu Pandit. Ravi Kishan stood out too. His unpredictable behaviour added tension to the plot.
Critics also pointed out flaws. The story lost momentum in the Jaisalmer desert sequences. Some subplots felt stretched. Some viewers needed time to adjust to the new actor playing Bablu.
How to watch
The film is on Prime Video. All three seasons of the Mirzapur series are on the platform too. Fans can watch the show first and then move on to the film. The interquel setting makes this order easy to follow.
