Local cinema triumphed at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), with Singaporean director Ang Geck Geck’s feature debut Ah Girl winning best Asian feature film at the festival’s Silver Screen Awards.
The comedy drama, about a seven year old girl trying to navigate her parents’ separation in 1990’s Singapore, was first developed at the SGIFF Southeast Asian Film Lab in 2015.
Meanwhile, a collection of five short films from Singapore Panorama – Second Life, Second Skin – took home the audience choice award.
The best director prize was presented to Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat for Berlinale opening film No Good Men. Nepal’s Pushpa Thing Lama for Elephants In The Fog and Indonesia’s Putri Marino for Four Seasons In Java shared the best performance award.
The acting awards were announced by acclaimed Hong Kong actor Anthony Wongilm Competition, but his trip was cancelled on medical advice due to air pollution in Singapore affecting his respiratory problems
While Wong continued his jury duties remotely, he was unable to attend the In Conversation With session and the post-screening dialogue of his first acting role in 1985’s My Name Ain’t Suzie.
The awards ceremony took place at the Singtel Waterfront Theatre on October 31, the second-last day of SGIFF.
The Asian premiere of Vintage Violence wrapped the festival on November 1 as its first closing feature in more than a decade. The film’s Ukrainian-US director Eugene Kotlyarenko and his stars Cole Sprouse and Kiko Mizuhara attended the red-carpet event at the historic Capital Theatre.
Encore screenings of selected award-winning films will be held on November 7. The best Singapore short film will be paired with the audience choice award, while the best Southeast Asian short film will be screened alongside the best Asian feature film.
