The Glasgow Film Festival (GFF, February 27-March 7) will have a strong focus on co-production for its 2027 edition, with an international pitching pilot and a day dedicated to fostering opportunities.
The co-production pitch forms part of the industry focus, which runs from March 1-5, and welcomes submissions from international producers seeking a co-producer.
Selected filmmakers will have the opportunity to pitch their project to financiers, sales agents, distributors, and local and international producers. Projects must be feature-length and have already secured some finance, which can include development funding. International projects applying must be interested in co-producing with the UK.
The pitching session will sit within the festival’s new co-production day, dedicated to showcasing the benefits of working with producers in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Further details will be unveiled with the full industry focus programme on January 27, next year.
Canada will be the festival’s spotlight country, with Canadian films in the lineup including the UK premiere of Leah Nelson’s animated drama about Alzheimer’s, which first bowed at Cannes, Tangles; Toronto premieres such as Michael Dowse’s comedy drama The Stunt Driver and Alexandre Franchi’s French-Canadian thriller L’Autre, and Gloria Mercer’s SXSW selection, crime thriller A Safe Distance.
GFF has also established a new partnership with Omniplex Cinemas, taking over an entire floor of its Renfrew Street venue.
The retrospective theme is ‘Somebody’s watching: surveillance, voyeurism and performance’. Titles screening in the programme include George Orwell’s 1984, Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, Richard Linklater’s animation A Scanner Darkly, Steven Soderbergh’sSex, Lies And VideotapeandYoussef Chahine’s Cairo Station.
“Cinema is by its nature a voyeuristic medium, and there is a rich history of filmmakers wrestling with that uneasy reality,” said Paul Gallagher, head of programme for Glasgow Film.
“In our current moment we are all increasingly aware of being watched, both with and without our consent, so it feels like a perfect time to ask what cinema has taught us about the perils and pleasures of looking and being looked at.”
The full GFF27 programme will be announced on January 20.
