May, June, July and August each crossed $1bn as audiences returned to cinemas across the US

Hollywood has officially delivered its biggest summer at the domestic box office, with ticket sales reaching approximately $4.76bn between May 1 and Labor Day on September 7. The figure narrowly surpassed the previous summer record of $4.755bn, set in 2013.

The result marks a major moment for the US cinema business following several difficult years for theatrical releases. The summer period from May through Labor Day has become one of the clearest indicators of the health of the movie industry, and the 2026 result has now moved ahead of the previous high without adjusting either figure for inflation.

According to Rentrak figures the 2026 summer season generated $4.76bn domestically. The period was also longer than the comparable 2013 season, lasting 130 days compared with 123 days because of the placement of Labor Day on the calendar. Ticket prices and inflation also mean that the record does not necessarily represent the highest number of individual admissions

Still, the performance represents a significant recovery for cinemas. Domestic ticket sales had already reached $4.6bn through August 31, marking a 26.1% increase from the same period in 2025. The final Labor Day figures pushed the season past the 2013 benchmark and gave the industry its strongest summer since before the pandemic.

One striking feature of the 2026 season was the performance across individual months. May generated approximately $1.07bn, followed by $1.08bn in June, $1.18bn in July and $1.27bn in August. It was the first summer on record in which all four months crossed the $1bn mark.

Several major releases helped drive the resurgence. Sony’s Spider Man: Brand New Day became one of the defining blockbusters of the season, spending six consecutive weeks at No. 1 at the domestic box office. The Tom Holland led Marvel film finished the Labor Day period with approximately $923.3m domestically and around $2.4bn worldwide.

Its domestic total also put it within striking distance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which holds the unadjusted domestic record at approximately $936.7m. Spider Man: Brand New Day is therefore positioned to challenge a record that has stood since 2015.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey also played a major role in the summer’s success. The Universal epic reached approximately $589m domestically and $1.62bn worldwide, giving the film one of the strongest theatrical runs of Nolan’s career. It also became the first film since Avatar to pass $1bn in international box office revenue.

Other successful releases included Pixar’s Toy Story 5, while original and lower budget titles such as Obsession also found significant audiences. The season therefore was not driven entirely by established franchises, with horror and original filmmaking attracting younger audiences alongside major studio <a href="https://cinemamix360.com/2026/09/08/spiritland-productions-captures-audio-for-royal-edinburgh-military-tattoo/” title=”Spiritland Productions captures audio for Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo”>productions. Reuters reported that Gen Z audiences and women were among the groups contributing to the broader theatrical recovery.

The contrast with the previous decade is particularly notable. The 2013 summer record was powered by releases including Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 2 and Man of Steel. In 2026, superhero cinema again played a major role through Spider Man: Brand New Day, while The Odyssey demonstrated the continued appeal of large scale original filmmaking.

The milestone does come with important context. Adjusted for inflation, the record looks different, and the longer 2026 summer period gave studios additional days to generate revenue. Yet the scale of the result remains significant. After years of uncertainty surrounding cinema attendance, audiences have demonstrated that major theatrical releases can still generate enormous demand.
