Tom Cruise looks nothing like himself — and unlike anyone he has ever played — in his latest movie role.

After months of teasing and anticipation, the trailer for “Digger” — the upcoming movie directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu — finally dropped on Monday. It stars a practically unrecognizable Cruise transformed into eccentric billionaire Digger Rockwell, the most powerful man in the world, on a “frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything,” the movie’s logline states.

“Digger here got us into this mess, and Digger’s gonna dig us out again,” John Goodman (playing the ailing U.S. president) says in the trailer.

“But if we can’t control the course of nature,” Cruise’s Digger adds, “at least we can control the narrative.”

Described as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the film’s ensemble cast also includes Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Cruise first unveiled his dramatic new look earlier this year at CinemaCon, where audiences saw the “Digger” trailer for the first time. Reflecting on the role, the actor noted that it had been a long time coming.

“It took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell,” he said of his quirky oil baron, per Variety, before introducing the clip.

Speaking at a recent press event for the film, Iñárritu shared that “Digger” was a project roughly a decade in the making, but he always envisioned Cruise in the lead role.

“The transformation he went through was astonishing,” the director said in a prerecorded video “And I think we both know what it means to carry an entire career into a single moment like this. We both knew that throughout our journeys, we had never done anything even close to this.”

Cruise echoed his sentiments, adding: “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro when we went in, ever. And when you see this film, it’s totally original.”

Audiences will see for themselves when “Digger” hits theaters Oct. 2.
