To generations of Bangladeshis, she will forever remain the country’s beloved mishti meye—the sweet girl of the silver screen. The beloved actress Kabori Sarwar captivated audiences with her effortless charm, expressive performances and remarkable screen presence.
Kabori made her film debut in Subhash Dutta’s “Sutorang” in 1964, launching a career that would establish her as one of the most influential actresses in Bangladeshi cinema. She went on to star in landmark films including “Hiramon”, “Moynamoti”, “Chorabali”, “Paruler Sangsar”, “Binimoy”, “Bahana”, “Nijere Hariye Khunji”, “Titash Ekti Nadir Naam”, “Rongbaaz”, “Sareng Bou” and “Sujan Sokhi”, among many others.
Her contributions extended beyond acting. Kabori also ventured into filmmaking, making her directorial debut with “Ayna”. She later directed “Ei Tumi Shei Tumi”, for which she also wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue. Although the film remains unreleased, it stands as a testament to her creative ambitions beyond the screen.
Today marks what would have been Kabori’s 75th birth anniversary. She was born on July 19, 1950, in Boalkhali, Chattogram.
Beyond her memorable performances, Kabori’s films produced some of the most cherished songs in Bangladeshi cinema. Many of the tracks she lip-synced on screen have become timeless classics, continuing to evoke nostalgia decades after their release. On the occasion of her birth anniversary, here are ten unforgettable songs that remain inseparable from her cinematic legacy.
Gun Gun Gaan Gahiya Neel Bhramara Jay
Directed by Khan Ataur Rahman, “Sujan Sokhi” paired Kabori opposite Farooque. The evergreen number was sung by Sabina Yasmin, whose emotive vocals perfectly complemented Kabori’s graceful screen presence.
Tumi Je Amar Kobita
One of the most celebrated romantic songs in Bangladeshi cinema, this duet featured Razzak and Kabori in “Dorpochurno”, directed by Nazrul Islam. Sung by Mahmudun Nabi and Sabina Yasmin, the song was written by Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal and composed by Subal Das.
She Je Keno Elo Na, Kichhu Bhalo Lage Na
In Zahirul Haq’s “Rongbaaz”, Kabori starred opposite Razzak once again. Voiced by Sabina Yasmin and composed by Anwar Parvez, the poignant melody remains one of the film’s defining musical moments.
Moner Ronge Rangabo
Directed by Masud Parvez (Sohel Rana), the film “Masud Rana” brought Sohel Rana and Kabori together on screen. The song, performed by Selina Azad, featured lyrics and composition by Azad Rahman.
Directed by Mita, the film “Neel Akasher Niche” starred Razzak and Kabori in lead roles. Ferdousi Rahman lent her voice to the song, with lyrics by Mohammad Moniruzzaman and music composed by Satya Saha.
Kabori teamed up with Bulbul Ahmed in Abdullah Al Mamun’s acclaimed film “Dui Jibon”. Sung by Sabina Yasmin, the song featured lyrics by Moniruzzaman Monir and music by Alam Khan.
In Raju Siraj’s “Aradhana”, Kabori and Bulbul Ahmed delivered another memorable pairing. The song was sung by Shammi Akhtar, with lyrics by Mukul Chowdhury and composition by Alam Khan.
Hoi Hoi Rongila Re
Another musical highlight from “Rongbaaz”, this lively duet was performed by Sabina Yasmin and Mohammad Ali Siddiqui. The composition by Anwar Parvez added infectious energy to the film.
Directed by Kazi Zahir, “Bodhu Biday” paired Kabori with Bulbul Ahmed. Sung by Sabina Yasmin and composed by Debu Bhattacharya, the song remains a favourite among classic film enthusiasts.
Kazi Zahir’s “Moynamoti” brought together Razzak and Kabori in another iconic pairing. The song featured lyrics by Syed Shamsul Haq, music by Bashir Ahmed, and vocals by Sabina Yasmin.
