Part industry satire, part cautionary tale, Greenroom Films director Meena Ayittey’s latest short explores tokenism, technology and the increasingly strange business of being a director

Greenroom Films director Meena Ayittey has never been afraid to explore the more complicated corners of culture and creativity through her work. A filmmaker with a sharp eye for human behaviour and a love of storytelling in all its forms, her work spans commercials, documentary and narrative film, including her acclaimed short ‘Mama’ and the award winning documentary ‘Black Creative’.

For her latest short, Meena turns the camera closer to home, taking aim at the advertising and film industry itself. Blending dark comedy with increasingly surreal satire, the film explores the absurdities of life as a director, the uncomfortable reality of tokenism and an industry currently grappling with what the rise of AI might mean for creativity.

Meena explained where the idea came from, the experiences that found their way into the film and why a goat ultimately became the perfect way to end it.

“This short was very much inspired by my love of dark comedy, particularly shows like Black Mirror. Being a film director often looks glamorous and exciting, and, to be fair, sometimes it actually is. But there is also a much darker, stranger and occasionally ridiculous side to the industry.

I wanted to explore the absurdity that often comes with the job, while also poking fun at the sometimes well meaning but deeply patronising tokenism that directors of colour can experience. Some of the film is inspired by my own experiences in the industry, but I wanted to take those experiences and push them into increasingly absurd territory.

The industry is also at a pretty strange crossroads when it comes to AI. I am a firm believer that AI has its place, but that place should never be in replacing creativity or creatives. I had the concept for this film long before we arrived on set. The idea itself did not come from AI, although, somewhat ironically, the ending would not have been possible without it.

The final goat sequence is both a joke and a warning. It is a ridiculous example of what AI can do, but hopefully it also leaves you wondering where all of this is heading. Most importantly, I hope the goat stays with you long after the film ends.”
