From our “Who’s Buying What” page: In Munich, Germany, public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk, or BR, has deployed a SMPTE ST 2110-based radio Outside Broadcasting van with Lawo’s audio technology.
BR operates five radio networks. Its BR Klassik network features classical music and live opera, of which the van, known as Ü5, is used for remote broadcasts.
Inside the revamped van is a 48-fader Lawo mc²56 MkIII production console, used in its audio control room. The HOME mc² DSP App handles its audio processing through a server. Lawo’s Power Core gateways handle onboard and stagebox I/O.
The van includes three primary workstations: the main audio engineer’s position at the mc²56 MkIII, a second position for the balance engineer and a technical and recording workstation.
A crystal controller is installed at the recording position, allowing control functions to be assigned from the main console, a release said.
Audio and video signals are transported across BR’s IP network using SMPTE ST 2110 and AES67 standards.
The truck was originally built in 2007 and its chassis and body were retained, Lawo said. But the technical infrastructure inside the vehicle was built from the ground up. The project was conceived in 2022.
Ü5’s first production assignment took place in January with the recording of a chamber musicconcert for BR Klassik, while in February, the vehicle handled transmission operations for a live operabroadcast from the Bavarian State Opera.
Audio mixing was performed in the venue’s permanently installed control room and handed off to Ü5 for transmission. From there, the vehicle managed the broadcast chain, including pre-show and intermission programming, Lawo said.
The vehicle has also been used for jazz production.
