At San Diego Comic-Con last week, we reported on the first public comments from writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley about their Star Trek movie, which was announced as in development last November. Now there is a bit more information from the pair, who offer more insights into their approach to bring the franchise back to the big screen after a decade.
Subverting… with respect
Goldstein and Daley were at SDCC to promote their new Cold War action comedy Maydaystarring Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh, but at that panel last week they revealed the script for the Star Trek movie is “in progress” and they were “very excited about it.” Collider got them talking a bit more about Trek at an SDCC press event, with Daley again talking about the “surprising” approach they are taking:
“I think, if we get to make it, it would be very surprising for people because it is a version of Star Trek that no one’s ever seen before. We are subverting it in a way that I think would be very exciting and also set itself apart from the television versions of the IP, but also the J.J. movies. It’s just a matter of if we get to actually get it done.”
These comments show the filmmakers are being realistic about getting their movie past the development stage, where many Star Trek projects have languished over the last decade, including a fourth Kelvin movie and a new “origin” movie, both of which were shelved last fall following the Skydance takeover of Paramount. Assigning Star Trek to Goldstein and Daley was the first big move made regarding Star Trek by the new Skydance team.
Last week, Goldstein and Daley talked about their Star Trek movie being set “a bit further in the future” than previous entries, and with the new Collider update, they reconfirmed their movie would feature new characters. Goldstein also clarified they are “subverting” Star Trek, clarifying “I’d say ‘subvert with respect.’ It’s kind of like that old Reagan quote, ‘Trust but verify.’ That’s how we approached D&D,” referring to their 2023 Paramount movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which starred Trek vet Chris Pine.
On the panel last week, the pair said the movie they are developing is designed for both fans and new audiences, which makes sense for a franchise that has has been absent from theaters for a decade (and it’ll be longer by the time it arrives). “You don’t have to be a Star Trek fan to like what we’re doing because it’s a very character-based film that we’re putting together,” said Goldstein, adding “We want to do something that is different, that will surprise people, but also respects the DNA of what Star Trek is in this case.”
