Short documentary filmmakers have until August 20 to enter the 42nd IDA Documentary Awards, with the 2026 competition introducing revised pricing and an extended deadline for IDA members.
Short documentary filmmakers considering the 2026 IDA Documentary Awards have ten days remaining before the competition closes to the general public.
The International Documentary Association is currently accepting entries for the 42nd Annual IDA Documentary Awards, including its Best Short Documentary category. Non-member submissions close on 20 August 2026, while eligible IDA members have until 1 September 2026 to submit at the same final-period price.
The awards are open to qualifying projects completed or scheduled to premiere between 1 September 2025 and 31 December 2026. IDA says its competition is open internationally to emerging and established documentary filmmakers.
How much does a short documentary submission cost?
For independent filmmakers, the standard final-period fee for a Short Documentary entry is $200 before location-based discounts or applicable membership reductions. Corporate and institutional submissions carry a higher standard fee of $380 during the same period.
The 2026 awards introduced a new international pricing model designed to account for filmmakers’ country of residence. IDA groups countries into three pricing bands, with filmmakers in some territories receiving reductions of 40% or 80% from the standard entry price.
IDA members at the Doc Maker level and above also receive a 20% discount, according to the organisation’s updated 2026 rules.
Filmmakers who required a fee waiver needed to request one by 1 August, meaning that particular application window has already closed.
What happens after submission?
IDA says entries across the awards are reviewed by committees made up of more than 200 international filmmaking and industry professionals. For the Best Feature Documentary and Best Short Documentary categories, the nominees are selected through the judging process before IDA members vote to determine the eventual winners.
The Best Short Documentary category has previously included work from independent filmmakers as well as shorts distributed through organisations including The New York Times Op-Docs, Netflix and interfilm Berlin. The 2025 Best Short Documentary award went to Juan Vicente Manrique’s Looking for a Donkey.
An important deadline distinction
The 20 August deadline applies to the general public, but IDA members receive additional time and can submit through 1 September 2026.
Filmmakers whose eligible projects will not be completed by August 20 may also request a deadline exception. IDA says these are considered individually, and requests must themselves be submitted by 20 August. Approved late entries incur an additional fee.
Documentary filmmakers planning to enter should therefore review the eligibility requirements and their applicable location-based fee before completing their submission.
With the general call for entries closing on 20 August 2026, filmmakers with an eligible short documentary who intend to compete this year should begin the submission process soon rather than relying on the later member deadline.
