On September 20, 2026, at the age of 82, Tatyana Loginova died. She was the first female cinematographer of feature films in the history of Belarusfilm studio, a laureate of the USSR State Prize and one of the pioneers of independent Belarusian cinema. Her colleagues announced the filmmaker’s death on social media.
Tatyana Loginova’s name entered the golden fund of Belarusian culture primarily through her creative partnerships with Belarusian cinema classics — Valery Rubinchyk and Mikhail Ptashuk. She also worked with independent directors at the private Tatiana film studio, which emerged in the 1990s.
Tatyana Loginova’s talent was reflected in her ability to sense each director’s unique style and transform it into visual dramaturgy. Working with Valery Rubinchyk revealed her mastery of creating poetic light and shadow: from subtle psychological accents in the war drama “A Wreath Of Sonnets” (1976) to the iconic Gothic world of “The Wild Hunt Of King Stakh” (1979), which received international recognition and became a classic of cinematic art.
Her creative partnership with Mikhail Ptashuk was marked by landmark adaptations of Belarusian literature. In “The Black Castle Olshansky” (1983), Loginova’s cinematography helped create the atmosphere of Karatkevich’s reflection and mystery, while in the film adaptation of Vasil Bykau’s novella “The Sign of Trouble” (1986), she achieved an utmost severity and precision of the frame, conveying the full tragedy of a people’s suffering.
The Master’s Career And Major Achievements
Tatyana Loginova was born on April 5, 1944, in Moscow to a family of a front-line cinematographer. After graduating from VGIK in 1971, she devoted her career to Belarusfilm studio.
In the early 1990s, the filmmaker, together with screenwriters Ela Milava and Iryna Pismennaya, founded the first independent women’s film and video studio, “Tatiana,” in Minsk. It was at this studio, in cooperation with German producers, that the documentary “Orange Vests,” directed by Yury Khashchavatski, was produced. The film achieved significant international success: it was screened at the Berlin International <a href="https://cinemamix360.com/2026/09/22/the-worst-dressed-stars-at-the-2026-toronto-film-festival/" title="The Worst-Dressed Stars At The 2026 Toronto Film Festival“>Film Festival (Berlinale) and acquired for broadcast by leading European television channels.
For her outstanding cinematography in the film “Youth of a Genius” (1982), directed by Elyor Ishmukhamedov, Loginova received the USSR State Prize. Her body of work also includes such distinctive fiction and documentary films as “The Birdwatcher” by Arvo Iho, “Landscape With Three Bathers” by Valery Rubinchyk, “Anastasia Slutskaya” by Yury Yelkhau, and others.
