Story:Set over four days of Diwali celebrations, the film follows a multi-generational family navigating festive joy, everyday chaos and togetherness.Review:In an Indian household, Diwali is as much about unsolicited advice, awkward questions and buried secrets as it is about diyasand mithai. Meethe Mein Kya Hai taps into this familiar domestic chaos, delivering a warm, relatable family drama that, much like a festive sweet, proves a little too predictable for its own good. The story unfolds over four days of Diwali celebrations at the Lucknow home of family matriarch Nani (Rohini Hattangady). At the centre is Jai (Ritwik Bhowmik), a young widower struggling to cope with his wife Tara’s (Kanika Kapur) accidental death. Having distanced himself from his family, he is drawn back when his sister Sana (Dalai) reveals her secret marriage to Karam (Vikram Bakshi), a divorcee with a child from a previous relationship. The announcement disrupts the festivities, exposing generational differences, family prejudices and unresolved resentments. Written and directed by debutant Radhika Bansal, the film finds its strength in recognisable family dynamics: an overbearing mother who confuses concern with control, relatives with opinions on everything, and elders who consider every personal decision a family matter. These interactions occasionally capture the humour and discomfort of a typical family reunion with refreshing ease. However, familiarity is both the film’s biggest asset and its principal weakness. Sana’s marriage offers scope to explore second chances, blended families and social acceptance, but the screenplay barely scratches the surface. Similarly, Jai’s grief could have provided a compelling emotional anchor, yet his journey is frequently overshadowed by the larger family drama. The film raises pertinent questions without delving deeply enough into them. The episodic storytelling further affects the pace, with several domestic confrontations feeling more like observations of family life than meaningful narrative developments. While the humour occasionally lands, much of it relies on predictable exchanges and familiar family stereotypes. The result is a film that remains pleasant but rarely emotionally engaging. The performances lend the narrative considerable warmth. Bhowmik brings sincerity to Jai’s grief, though his character deserved a more substantial arc. Dalai is convincing as Sana, portraying her independence with confidence and spontaneity. Their sibling bond is among the film’s more engaging elements, aided by Ayuushman Ghai’s easy camaraderie. Ayesha Raza stands out as the caring yet controlling mother, effectively capturing a parent’s struggle to accept choices beyond her influence. Gaurav Sharma is dependable, while Hattangady lends Nani an affectionate, lived-in quality. Bakshi makes Karam likeable, while Shivika Rishi adds a youthful perspective to the otherwise conventional domestic setting. The ensemble is largely effective, although not every character gets enough room to develop beyond familiar family archetypes. The conversational dialogue occasionally delivers a sharp observation. When Karam asks Jai whom he should maintain his distance from in the complicated family tree, Jai’s reply β€” β€œEveryone” β€” neatly captures the politics of family gatherings. Such moments, however, are not frequent enough to give the writing a consistently distinctive voice.Amit Trivedi’s upbeat Ichak Dana Bichak Dana adds festive energy, while the cinematography makes appealing use of Lucknow’s old-world charm. The city’s architecture and culinary delights, from kachoris to kebabs, lend the film an inviting sense of place.Meethe Mein Kya Hai has all the ingredients of a festive family entertainer, but lacks the storytelling spice to make it memorable. A comforting yet conventional family feast that offers a pleasant watch without leaving a lasting aftertaste.
